Each Measure Feature: The Storm Windows
FEATURE
There’s a new single out by The Storm Windows, and it’s taking simplicity and appreciation of folky fun to a new level. The Storm Windows are a trio with Rob Mathews on guitar and vocals, Don Mathews on upright bass and vocals, and Erik Anderson on the drums. They call upstate New York and Vermont home; they’re often found playing showcases or bar gigs. Their name originates from a John Prine song, and they do their best to honor their musical hero’s name with their original lyrics. They focus on the nostalgic blend of current folk, simplicity, and an air of optimism in their songs.
More Lucky feels gentle. Like a song of advice your mama might reassure you with after a difficult day. It’s a lesson learned in giving grace to life’s ups and downs and knowing whatever hand you’re dealt is just part of existence as a whole. “Hey, this here life is like throwing dice. You have to roll, you have to roll. Dollar bets on long-shot stakes. Adam says, Eve, don’t trust that snake. Take my advice, forget about Paradise. You have to roll, you have to roll.” There’s a break in vocals where a horn arrangement lifts you up in a daze of appreciation. It fits so well within this folky, feel-good single. “True love is luckier than a worn-out glove. More Lucky, More Lucky. I know that’s true; I spun the wheel, and I found you. More Lucky More Lucky. Hey, this here life is like throwing dice. You have to roll, you have to roll.”
The Storm Windows seem to have figured out a formula for hitting all the right nerves of listeners. Their music stirs feelings of being calm, appreciative, optimistic, and accepting of life’s curveballs. I’m looking forward to delving further into their style and their new EP with the same title as this featured song: More Lucky.
