Each Measure Feature: Mitchell MacDonald
FEATURE
Mitchell MacDonald grew up in the small northern community of the Garden of Eden in Nova Scotia. It is in these Canadian woods where he fondly remembers playing classic county music with his grandfather. It’s in these simple beginnings that he learned to love the storytelling power of music. While he did do some playing and songwriting earlier in his career, life got a bit busy and he had to take some time away from the craft. Recently, he has come back to the familiar strings and mics with a renewed fire for crafting powerful songs reminiscent of Zach Bryan, Tyler Childers, with some classic country elements as well.
His latest song, “Home to You,” is simple in its construction, featuring only an acoustic guitar, violin, and vocals, but this simplicity is what makes the song great. The instrumentals serve as a backdrop to the real message of the song, which is told through the beautiful lyrics. Mitchell McDonald paints a vivid picture of longing to come home after a hard day. The song speaks to that feeling of desperation and yearning for comfort amidst stress—a feeling that we are all too familiar with these days. This is what makes the song great, because it taps into that raw, human emotion and lets us know that no matter what day we’ve had, there is an end to the road and loving arms waiting for us. If Mitchell keeps on writing songs like this, his next album is going to be perfect for late night drives or road trips—times where you are alone with your thoughts, remembering why we do what we do.
