Music Video Spotlight: Glitter
FEATURE
I miss the days of quality music videos. You know, back when MTV was a powerhouse and musicians put a lot of thought into the video that accompanied their music. I used to get excited for the release of a music video and now, well they feel, more often than not, just something to have on in the background while the song plays. But before we all have a moment of silence for the lost art of the well thought-out music video, there are shining beacons of hope like “Glitter” by Sam Palladio being released in the modern age.
The music video for “Glitter” is simple in its construction, primarily featuring Sam Palladio sitting in a chair and singing along to the song. What makes it shine is the details and connection to the song itself. The whole music video has a vintage filter over it with a special effect that gives everything a soft glow to it, similar to glitter. Furthermore, during the chorus, lights are cast on the background in a glittering fashion. But the true connection between song and music video go well below the surface.
“Glitter” tells a story about a lost, unrequited love. The narrator sings about how they are “under the covers/She’s covered in glitter/ she’s dancing with someone”, defining how one-sided the relationship was. While the narrator sits at home, wallowing, the ex is out dancing with someone new having moved on already. Yet the narrator can’t blame themselves or the ex because “she wrote it there on the wall/ but I just didn’t want to read it.” By having Sam Palladio sing this alone in a room with little light, the melancholy of the song shines through.
When you watch the music video and listen closer to the lyrics, you really start to empathize with the narrator. You can almost feel the loneliness and sorrow radiating from him. This not only makes the song great, but the music video as well. If you have the time and love a well-crafted music video, make sure to go watch and listen to “Glitter” by Sam Palladio.
