Each Measure Feature: Jaz Vernon

FEATURE

It is amazing to think about the colossal importance of the first few seconds of a song. You could string together the right notes and create a melody that goes down in the history books. Done correctly, after the first few seconds, you will have the entire room bursting with excitement for the rest of the song. Done wrong however and you will be met with boos or people will just turn off the track, not even wanting to see what else it has in store. For a lesson on how to start a song, I suggest a new summer time favorite of mine, “YKTV” by Jaz Vernon.

The song opens with a jazzy, soulful electric guitar that just draws you in. It is light, vibey, and almost feels like the notes are establishing a beat. Then, as if on que, the drums come in to solidify this beat and add on to it. It is a pretty technical melody heavily inspired from the complexities of jazz and it works wonderfully, especially once the vocals kick in.

Jaz Vernon adds an auto-tune filter to his vocal performance here that works well for the track. I’m always a bit scared when artists use auto-tune, fearing that they are doing so to hide the fact that they can not sing or hold a note. It is apparent that Jaz Vernon has the vocal talents, opting for the auto-tune filter to solidify the song’s soundscape.

Overall “YKTV” by Jaz Vernon is a jazzy R&B song that deserves a spot on your summer playlist. It is light, catchy, and a great song for any summer activity. If this is a taste of what is to come from the musical genius of Jaz Vernon, I am very excited to see what else he is going to produce.
