Each Measure Feature: Reina Mora

FEATURE

Love is one of the trickiest things to navigate in this world. Often, in our youth, we have a definition of true love and think that it is too easy. Then, as we get older and experience the dating world first hand, we quickly realize how naive we were. Through broken hearts and promises, we learn what true love really is. Yet on this path, you might come across someone again which begs the important question: is giving them a second chance the right call? This is a complex situation, one that Reina Mora covers perfectly in her latest music video for her song “Bad Decision.”

Reina Mora repeats the lines “Am I making a bad decision? Or are we making a masterpiece” to showcase the uncertainty of this move. I personally love this along with the other lyrics. Reina Mora is beautifully vulnerable with her lyrics throughout the song, laying her heart out on the track. Further evidence can be found in the line “Like when I say/It’s my last drink/Then I go and get another round.” I love how she portrays the uncertainty of love here and how so many times you keep going back for more even when you promised to never do so again. Yet this vulnerability is only heightened with the visually stunning music video.

In the music video, there are “flashbacks” of their relationship. These are done well with great lighting and I loved the vintage film filter of the clips. In between these flashbacks are shots of Reina Mora singing into the camera without the vintage film filter. This feels like she is talking to the viewer as a friend, asking us our own opinion on the relationship. All of this works together beautifully, highlighting the emotional appeal of the song and drawing us in closer to the song.

And I know that I have barely touched on the musical composition but do not worry, it is up to par with the rest of the elements. Yes it mostly features an acoustic guitar and simple chord progression but that is exactly what the song needs. It is an emotional ballad and if this song was over produced, the effect would be diminished.

Reina Mora has outdone herself with this music video and song. I greatly recommend that you go watch it a few times and dive into the music.
