FEATURE
MILYAM makes music for people who really listen.
When a MILYAM track is playing, it’s easy to tune out the rest of world and surrender to rich, colorful atmosphere she creates.
MILYAM has only been release music for a couple of years, but she’s already established herself as am ambient visionary, and her listenership is steadily growing. The up-and-comer recently received from praise from Ghana Plug for her “enveloping sounds and technical excellence,” and her latest single, “Intimacy,” is currently on rotation on Amazing Radio in the US and UK.
Engaging with her work is, first and foremost, an experience rather than a pastime. Listening to her 2024 single, “Lost in the Jungle,” really does feel like getting lost in the jungle: it’s hazy, mysterious, and vibrant. And like a jungle, its strength is in its variety.
Sonically, “Lost in the Jungle” is not defined by any one element that takes center stage. It’s a collection of sounds that complement each other, and under MILYAM’s skillful hand, it sounds cohesive rather than conflicting. There’s certainly a lot going on in the track, from distant audio loops and meandering guitar and piano melodies, to fast-paced drum machines and static undertones. Yet none of it feels overwhelming or out of place in context. It all seems to blend together to create an immersive sonic landscape.
What truly makes MILYAM unique as an artist is her creative use of texture. The actual lyrics she’s singing matter less than the breathy, sultry quality of her voice, and the lo-fi static backdrop is at least as important as the melody.
Like an abstract masterpiece, “Lost in the Jungle” is an exercise in using sound to create an atmosphere. It’s all about what feels right.
It’s a journey in two minutes, and it proves that music really can transport you to another world. My recommendation is to listen with your eyes closed. You might start to forget where you are.
