Each Measure Feature: Eshan Agarwal

FEATURE

Eshan Agarwal’s single “Last Hour” is an uplifting melody of courage at the final moments before the close. This New York singer-songwriter brings a classic cozy feeling to his lyrical storytelling with a simplified sound that awakens the imagination. Agarwal is relatively new to the scene, but no stranger to music. He’s been singing and performing since the age of five, but only in 2024 did he start releasing original music. His approach to music is personal and introspective, tied to his experience with synesthesia, where the senses collide in unexpected ways like sound becoming colorful and music becoming textural.

That wholly sensorial experience peeks through in the cinematic touch to Last Hour, the songs' elements coming together to create that familiar quickening of your heartbeat before a moment is lost and disappears into memory (I couldn’t help but imagine the final run to the airport, to stop the one you love from hopping on that plane).  His voice never wails, never breaks, never gets crazy and wild, but rather stays a soothing murmur that accompanies us until the end. In that control and vulnerability, listeners are given that empathetic experience, desperate yet magical, when one uses their last energy in a final attempt to make a change. The predictable rhyming scheme of the lyrics and the crystal-clear vocal quality bring a wonderful relatability to the storyline, one that speaks of honesty and that small tender summoning of courage.

Agarwal shares that this single embodies its own message in the process, valuing restraint over emotional impulsiveness. Perhaps that’s how the intimate mix of Last Hour was achieved. The song begins with background babble that glides to a halt as the song kicks off with a humming piano and soft vocals. The lyrical narrative unwinds beautifully as the singer expresses the buildup of emotions, the cautious realizations paired with new instruments that pick up the pace for a rousing chorus. Drums, guitar, piano, strings—by the end of the singer's lament, the track is bursting with a hopeful energy, leaving listeners on a cliffhanger: “In our last hour, I’m breaking through the silence to ask you to stay. In our last hour, I promise you I’m trying, so don’t slip away, don’t slip a…”
