Each Measure Feature: Lulu Leloup
FEATURE
One of the best parts of jazz is hearing the creativity. Yes, many strike the keys of the piano at odd times but to be able to make it fit into the elusive melody and sound catchy? That is the trick of jazz, one that Lulu Leloup masters in her latest single “I Guess You Loved Me Until You Didn’t”.
The piano is playful, dancing around the time signature gracefully but never predictably. It causes the ear to chase it around the corner of the measure, excited to see where it goes next. Playing right beside this is an absolutely stellar vocal performance from the star herself. Lulu Leloup plays around with the melody herself giving a unique cadence to the song that elevates it to the next level. She and the piano are chasing the melody of the song around the bass and drums giving the whole song its catch vibe. And of course, what would a jazz classic be without some horns?
The trumpet adds the cherry on top of this groove with smooth, graceful moments rounding out the melody of this song. It is impressive to have so many different melodies working together in harmony. A lot of jazz songs attempt this only to fail creating either dull songs or incoherent chaos but Lulu Leloup rises far above these pitfalls and creates a song with perfection.
“I Guess You Loved Me Until You Didn’t” will transport you to the back booth of a smokey, dimly lit jazz lounge in the best way possible. And, if you are like me, you’ll find yourself listening to this song on repeat.
