Each Measure Feature: Elisa V

FEATURE

It’s been almost a musical mythical quest to merge classical and modern music. The unspoken divide between the two eras seems too easy a stereotype between “old school” and “new school.” Elisa V takes on exactly that quest, combining her classical prowess as an internationally performing violinist and the body-shaking allure of deep house music to step out as an electrifying new solo artist with something to say.

Not going to lie, at a first glance this powerful musician is a little intimidating. Originally from Veteli, Finland, Elisa Järvelä has no shortage of accolades, performing all over the world as a star violinist. In the flurry of her success, she continues to venture forward in her musical journey, now finally taking her to that interesting crossover between classical and modern music. It’s not a simple task, and for many classical musicians the outcome can, dare I say it, fall a little flat. Why try to combine the two genres when they are both so great on their own?

The new single “Love of Yesterday” defies my unfair expectation completely. A seamless balance of the trendy modern sweaty floor atmosphere with the undeniably chic violin solos is exactly on point. Smooth vocals introduce the melody with a classic swooshy backing, a nostalgic sound harkening to the 2000s, when Cascada took 10 seconds to fill the dance floor. The track drops into the bassline, quickly becoming the casual container for a mournful violin, a beautiful juxtaposition to the upbeat rhythm.

One of the beautiful things about this track is the moderation of all its elements. Each sound is appreciated for its timbre and expressive superpower; no compromises are needed to create a perfect harmony: one repeated refrain, a memorable beat that adds just enough, and that piercing emotion of the violin that layers right above the voice, becoming the protagonist of this story. The mix is truly perfect, letting each sound build upon each other in wonderful harmony.

Elisa V certainly has set the bar high for herself with the stunning first single! The upcoming LP Violin House only promises more of this enchanting new sound, with a bold live experience on the way. Yes, Elisa V, the song is the perfect way to step into the solo spotlight.
