FEATURE

New York multi-instrumentalist Toddd. released “Get Together” on April 4th, 2025 as the lead single off of his upcoming album. It represents an inspiring artistic journey and serves as an intriguing R&B-infused teaser for the album.

Lyrically, the song achieves a difficult kind of poetry in which the unspoken makes deeply private themes universal. It reads almost like an inner monologue which pushes the soul towards self-discovery and actualization. Each line feels loving but brutally honest, and Toddd. chooses to leave a lot unsaid in the song, instead allowing each of us to fill in the blanks with what we already know to be true about ourselves. Overall, “Get Together” seems to be an exploration of the private and often overly critical inner voices that make us who we are but are rarely revealed to others.

In keeping with these lyrical themes, the process behind creating “Get Together” was uniquely intimate and personal. Toddd. recorded the song in his own apartment rather than a studio. Heshowcases his impressive versatility on the track by performing all the instruments and vocals himself, but he collaborated with mixer Jake Aron and mastering engineer Alec Ness on the final product. The end result is a soulful and sensuous work of art that would be well-suited as the soundtrack to a rainy night in.

Toddd. cites British artists like Jordan Rakei and Tom Misch among his biggest influences, and echoes of their work are felt in “Get Together”’s melodic, almost jazzy instrumentation, which blend acoustic richness and electronic sophistication that undulates with heartbeat-steadiness throughout the track’s 3:37 run-time. Upon my first listen, the whispery, ethereal vocal performance sent shivers down my spine. Toddd. does an excellent job of capturing the “voice in your head” quality that I assume was his intention.

“Get Together” works beautifully as a standalone piece, but it’s a sign of more to come, and I’m anxious to hear it as part of a larger work. If the rest of album is as soulful and moving as the single, Toddd. just might have a masterpiece in the works.
