Each Measure Feature: Lenny Jennings

A guitar riff born on a late night in Lenny Jenning’s home studio morphed its way into his debut single “Phases.” Released on April 18th, 2025, Lenny notes in his press release that the song evolved into something more personal as he navigated the fallout of a relationship. Now based out of Hackney, London, Lenny Jennings stays true to his small South African roots and musical family. “Phases” is a collaboration with fellow South African friend and award-winning musician, Evida (Liam Jones). Rhythm is their focus, and it’s so abundantly clear in the musicianship of the song. Strong guitar with appropriate build-ups throughout the song to drive the meaning forward is ever present. These melodies create emotional push and pulls that pair nicely with the lyrics.

“Phases” is the kind of song listeners can speculate on and emotionally regulate during a long drive home. Or—perhaps, a slow-paced run on city sidewalks to contemplate a tumultuous relationship. Whatever the setting may be, one thing is clear: “Phases” is a mood.

Lyrics of questioning his other half’s intentions and questioning the relationship overall lead to a sweet guitar ascension and headbopping percussion. It steadily increases in volume, leading to the chorus. “We’re going through phases, phases.” It feels like an intense justification for a toxic relationship, a melodic ocean tide of the mind and heart.

I will be adding “Phases” to my running playlist immediately. It's the perfect song for allowing duality in thought process while maintaining an ideal tempo for those footfalls. It is clear that Lenny Jennings is just getting started on blending some incredible fluidity between genres. “Phases” is a nod to alternative rock while also flowing through hip hop, soul, and jazz. It’s a collage of sound I didn’t know I needed but celebrated as soon as the sound waves touched my ears. I look forward to hearing the product of continued dedication and layered sound from Lenny and further collaboration with Evida!
