Each Measure Feature: Shane Revers

FEATURE

A brave Shane Revers launches into the musical universe with this twenty-two-minute EP entitled “Inside Room 17." Six songs were written and played from the heart, creating a perfectly warm and cozy atmosphere, weaving sympathetic themes of love and loss with heartfelt melodies and rich instrumentation.

The tone of this album is set up right from its first track, "Dear." Mournful vocals sway to a slow and steady folk pop rhythm. An intimate atmosphere is created right from the start, the acoustic style giving that “unplugged” feeling of being right there in the studio with the artist. The sound of the album is generally more textural than narrative, each song’s vocal melody coming in and out but often settling into the symphony of instruments to become one single, unified sound. While Revers' tender voice has an incredible range, he rather opts for instrumental solos. Expressive moments of electric guitar in “As Life Goes On” and swelling piano in the final track, "Stay," leave lingering notes like the aftertaste of the mournful love he sings of. Variation of voices and instruments keeps the tracks easy listening and interesting as each song leads us through the six-track journey.

My impressions? At first thought, it's refreshing to have a new artist blitz out an EP instead of leaving us waiting single after single. The album is also pretty much a solo project, which is always commendable. Perhaps it's that solo focus that emboldens him to write with vulnerability that would otherwise feel too edited. To aid that vision, Revers' concept for this album is front and center in the title. He imagines the metaphorical “room” as a space where these emotions exist, the invitation being to open the door and have a look around. Part of me is curious about what collaboration could do to Revers’ sound, because despite his solid style, I do get the sense there might be another side to him (a revenge ep?). Whether it happens now or further down the line, Revers is welcomed to the music world, and we can expect to hear more.
