Each Measure Feature: Samyula
FEATURE
The exceptionally talented composer, pianist, and neuroscientist Samyula is set to release her upcoming LP, Ethereal, on August 8th of this year. In the meantime, fans of her exquisite classical soundscapes will enjoy listening to “Transcendent,” on repeat.
“Transcendent” was released on May 16th, and it offers a dreamy glimpse into what the Kjell Sonksen-engineered album will have to offer. The meditative piano instrumental lives up to its title, evoking feelings of inner peace, solemn dignity, and radical acceptance. The modern, minimalist arrangement achieves an understated beauty without overwhelming the listener.
In addition to her accomplishments as a musician, Barcelona-based Samyula also holds a PhD in neuroscience. She describes her musical philosophy as blend of science and artistry. With it’s intricate and multi-layered arrangement, “Transcendent” reflects Samyula’s mastery of both the emotional and technical aspects of her work. The rolling bass line and delicate melody complement each other with an elegance that resounds deeply in the soul, balancing an admiration for complexity with a yearning for simplicity.
What I find most compelling about the piece it is sincerity. Samyula is certainly a virtuosic performer, but she isn’t trying to be clever for the sake of impressing us. “Transcendent” is less like the proverbial well-oiled machine and more like a landscape that unfolds naturally into a panorama that’s as breathtaking as it is dynamic.
Like all of Samyula’s work, “Transcendent” is a sanctuary. It serves as a moment of much-needed focus and calm amid the busy, chaotic worlds that exist both inside and outside of us.
Ethereal, which will also include a rework of “Transcendent” by Joan Arnau Pàmies, promises to administer more of this salve for the weary soul, but if you need something to tide you over until it is released later this summer, this single might be just what the doctor ordered.
