Each Measure Feature: MiRET & Ochoa

FEATURE

When I was first drawn to listen to Blue by MiRET and Ochoa, I didn’t quite know what to expect. Anyone with two ears can be moved by the melody of a skillfully played piano, and Minimalism and Downtempo are two styles practically anyone can jive to and enjoy – the popularity of these two genres currently is a testament to this. However, being that I am not from a Mediterranean background or the biggest fan of techno or experimental music, I had my doubts. Thankfully, these doubts were blown away before I had even finished the first track.

Blue is quite like nothing I’ve ever heard before. The best and simplest way I can describe it in one sentence is: ‘modern tech meets classic tone.’ With that said, though, this only really scratches the surface of what Blue is really about.

You’ve heard the term emotional rollercoaster? Well, I’d say Blue is something like an acoustical rollercoaster. One minute it is serene and haunting, stringing me through the fields of my imagination and humanity’s past, and the next minute I am hit with echoes of piano that reverberate through my soul and suspend me in space.

In the next moment, I am ushered from that place as something under the surface starts to stir and begins to build. Then, I am blasted off into the future and into an unknown neon void as electronic synthesizers blaze like a thousand suns along the belt of Orion.

Then, as my soul soars to unfathomable heights, I am softly guided back to reality as more familiar tones of tranquil strings start to unfold, and soft piano melodies guide me to a safe landing into the land of bliss before the thrill ride starts over again. As the first track eventually draws to a conclusion, I don’t know if I’m ready for it, but I know I want more. If MiRET & Ochoa’s music is a drug, consider me hooked!

Again, Blue is quite like nothing I’ve heard before, and it is impossible to fit it into just one box. And this is the greatest compliment I could possibly give it. Real art is always original, and this is exactly what Blue is. It is new and exciting, while at the same time remains grounded in its roots and celebrates those artists that came before them.
