Each Measure Feature: Jay Putty

FEATURE

I’m a fan of anything John Fogerty-related. So when I heard Jay Putty’s version of Centerfield, I had a renewed sense of Americana. Putty has breathed new life into the classic just in time to round out summer. Putty’s cover of “Centerfield” was released on July 4th on all streaming platforms, a perfect day to feel its nostalgia and celebrate the core of American culture. Centerfield has always been close to the heart of Putty, noting that “This song is a love letter to baseball, nostalgia, and the people who raised me. I went to my first St. Louis Cardinals game at six months old. My mom taught me how to throw; my dad was my coach. When the Fourth of July rolls around, I don’t think of fireworks—I think of family, and I think of baseball.” His songs have been praised by People Magazine, Billboard, and Rolling Stone India. He lives by a strong core message: “It’s okay to hurt, and it’s okay to heal slowly.” Audiences respond to authenticity, and this message resonates strongly.

Putty is originally from a small town in Indiana and now calls Nashville home. He’s known for channeling his hardships and resilience into hopeful lyricism and silver linings. Between his origins in small-town America and optimistic persona, “Centerfield” feels just right for Putty to cover. His most recent EP, Mountains and Valleys, was released in June of this year and has gained traction for its upbeat sound and bright-side lyricism. Putty clearly has love and magic to share with the world, and he is doing so in sharing his talents. I’m so glad to hear Centerfield get some love this summer and renew the American spirit. I look forward to hearing more covers and originals from Putty in the years to come. Put him in, coach; he’s ready to play!
