Each Measure Feature: Highway Wolf

FEATURE

There is a little debate as to how to cover a “classic” song. Some fall into the camp of the purist, believing that covers must be absolute perfect replications of the original–down to the exact timing of every eighth note. Others fall into the camp of the spirit of the song. This camp likes to add a little flare to the covers, adding a part of their own musical soul into the song’s tapestry. I almost view these covers as love letters to the original. The artist’s connection to the song comes out in the cover and it makes for a wonderful listening experience. This is the case with Highway Wolf’s latest EP Lone, Never Alone.

The EP features five covers (though reimaginings might be the better word) and one original song. The covers featured on this EP capture what made the originals great while adding on the band’s unique sound. For example, “Werewolves of London.” Highway Wolf adjusted the melody subtly, even adding in a beautiful saxophone part to the song. You will still find yourself singing along to the iconic songs featured on this EP but, along the way, you will hear new, exciting things in the music. Highway Wolf has injected some new blood into these songs, creating a great love letter to some of the most iconic songs. This love of the classics trickles into their original song, “No Time for Time.”

This song feels like a time machine to the 60s/70s. It is a great soft-rock song with a slight psychedelic vibe to it. The song begins off slow and easy, gradually building up to an amazing guitar solo. It's a song that feels like it belongs next to the great classics of the soft-rock era. Plus it has a very catchy chorus to boot.

I love how Highway Wolf is bringing back what made classic rock great. The EP is built chord by chord, not engineered through AI or some editing software. It’s an EP built by people who truly and deeply love and appreciate music–a sentiment that goes into every song. This is what makes the EP great and what has me excited for more from this group of talented musicians.
