Each Measure Feature: Freya Magee
FEATURE
“Forget Yourself Not” by Freya Magee is a fun, creative, and upbeat song talking about the tragedies of modern dating. I love it! One of the main reasons is the simple uniqueness of it. Too many modern musicians steer away from trying new things, leaning heavily into what they know will work, unbothered by how boring it sounds. Freya Magee brings hope to the music scene by not only trying new things, but proving that it works. The best example of this can be found in the drums of this song.
In the beginning, I was getting a sense of the rhythm but right when I thought I knew what was coming next, the song changed course. This continues throughout the whole song, giving it a unique sound that entices the ear. I found myself loving the sound and excited to see what would happen next with the melody and instruments.
Furthermore are the lyrics of the song. It feels as if Freya Magee looked at all of the sorrows of modern dating and instead of frowning decided to have a little bit of a laugh at the whole thing. She brings a lighthearted aspect to the lyrics, like when she has to remind her date what he said, but then there are more serious moments. For example, “I won’t give too much of myself to someone that forgets themselves”.
I know I’ve talked about late-night drive songs before and this is another one for that playlist–especially if you are going on a drive to forget a terrible date. This reason and more makes Freya Magee a rising star to keep track of.
