Each Measure Feature: Francesca & The Apostrophe

FEATURE

When life hands us a bad hand, we want to throw it away and beg for another. It can
defeat us easily, sending us down a “woe is me” spiral. But, for others, they smile at the bad
hand. Almost laughing at how horrible it is right before turning it into something beautiful. This
is what Francesca & The Apostrophe has done. Francesca battled cancer, coming on top, and
writing an emotionally charged song called “The Apostrophe”. The sound design is melancholic,
invoking the nostalgic rhythms and melodies of the 90’s/2000’s. It feels a bit grungy, but only in
the slightest sense of the phrase, and underground like a great indie track. It's catchy without
being in your face about it which I love.

What I think this song does exceptionally well is the lyrics. Francesca touches on true
human emotions with her story telling. She covers life, sadness, neurodivergence, hope, and
other emotions all in under four minutes. I was shocked at how she covered the full range of
humanity in under four minutes! Furthermore, I loved the intelligence of the lyrics. She has
excellent references like “Feeling strong just like a Rupert's drop…But if you hit me in a crucial
spot, I shatter to the ground” or “Cause I'm a ghost, an apostrophe, marking the place where
missing things are lost”. Franscesca doesn’t just paint a story with her lyrics but invokes a
contemplative state amongst her listeners. These lines draw you in, getting you to honestly listen
to what’s being said, drawing you more and more into the beautiful song that is “The Apostrophe.”
