Each Measure Feature: Alimba

FEATURE

Spiros Aliprantis, or "Alimba," gets the head bobbing and the energy up with his latest 10-track electronic dance album, Resonance. What a perfect coincidence that I first listened to this album while on a coastline run. The movement, rhythm, and sweat set the perfect conditions to accompany each heart-thumping song. Without a single lyric, this album hits a classic EDM approach, playfully keeping the beat up and the energy high as each song creates a sonic universe, if only for a moment. The native Greek composer and producer first started the Alimba sound in 2010. Despite considerable traffic with singles, EPs, and now this longer LP, he retains a somewhat mysterious backstory, keeping the music in the forefront of his online presence.

His history of releases proves the curious spirit of Alimba, exploring sounds both dark and trancelike to the more rhythmic dance beats. The one thing binding the journey together is a self-proclaimed commitment to hardware synthesizers and that elusive triangular insignia. Resonance opens yet another chapter for Alimba that promises and delivers a fearless EDM plunge.

Resonance has all the trappings of a great dance set. The first track, “Dream State," eases into the groove, playing with some slower builds and delicate sounds, each texture layering upon the next. Before the track becomes too noisy, there’s a refreshing effect of almost wiping the sonic palette and bringing things down to a simple pulse. The album ramps up steadily like visiting different planets: the dark distortion of “Dark Legion," the bright vibration of “Zero G," and ending with the ethereal “Triagulum (Trance Mix)." My personal favorite so far is the in medias res of “Kalispera” coming hot on the tail of the opening track to thrust listeners straight into a futuristic club atmosphere.

What I love about this album is not just the variety, the apparent skill and intentionality, but it’s the limitless invitation for imagination. Alimba takes a sound, a rhythm, a simple progression, and plays with it like a new toy just out of the box—exploring all the flips and reversals before bringing it back to the moments of reprise. The complete collage of tracks is a generous collection coming together for one hell of a night out or a truly transportive listening experience. And if you haven’t had the pleasure quite yet, I can only recommend pounding pavement to keep the tracks coursing through the body.
