Each Measure Feature: Wishpenny

FEATURE

Wishpenny is Brian and Regina Russell, a husband-and-wife duo that tips their shared hat to a musical trek of over three decades. Brian, a driving guitarist and master of sound production, provides the perfect complement to Regina’s soulful vocal, acoustic rhythm guitar, and killer drum playing. The two met at the University of Arkansas and have patched Regina's roots of Arkansas folk and country into Brian's Memphis rock-a-billy blues. Their independent albums, 'Shine Like New’ (2004) and ‘Bound To’ (2010), best express their draw to all things musical and their eclectic style. Their folk-rock mash-up has had them gracing the stage of such notable venues as the Quitman Preservation Music Hall, Dee’s Country Cocktail Lounge, Tennessee Music Tree Festival and the Hippie Chick Twang Show. Their overall vibe, continually augmented by nimble guest musicians, has had Wishpenny in the mix with the creative heartbeat of Music City, USA.

Welcome to the captivating world of Wishpenny's most recent release, "Day After Dark." This album is an intricate merger of evocative lyrics, Regina's deeply unique vocal stylings, and Brian's masterful guitar work. “Day After Dark,” the title track, reveals the character of the album: a profusion of ebullient, toe-tapping love vibes, as does the raucous “Better than we Found,” with its cathedral chorus and noisily universal celebration of life's essentials. “Not about Love" and “Escape Velocity" illuminate the album's darker recesses and certainly the furthest reaches of introspection. A uniquely diverse and compelling outing. The result is an album very much unto itself, and their body of work is unmatched in both its depth and emotional immediacy. Thank you for dropping in and for exploring the depth of "Day After Dark" by Wishpenny.
