Each Measure Feature: Tim

My instincts as a yoga teacher are awakened with the first few sounds of LA musical artist Tim. Warm synth chords pierce the silence, the kind that instantly relaxes you and makes me think of one of those sunrise lamps one buys to beat depression. The gentleness of the song is matched as, presumably, Tim’s voice enters, speaking with a hushed quality like someone could be sleeping in the next room. With only the two musical elements, voice and synth, the song continues to unwind, carrying that same calm quality for a little over six minutes. The free-flowing words tumble out with an easy beauty like tender secrets told in the early hours of an after-party.
So what is this track all about? At first it might seem like there is something “to get,” but after a few minutes it seems clear that this is what the song is, and listeners can relax and just roll with it. It’s easy to do that when the instrumentation and vocals are such a pleasantly fragile pair that they ooze a sense of tranquility and calm reflection.
With a closer listen and think, I feel Solo hits a deeper chord than just a nice-sounding song. The spoken word quality with barely coherent fragments of speech seems to build a scrapbook of feelings over images. Even on repeat for eight times over, I can only seem to remember a few fleeting words: “rice and beans,” “cocaine,” “big dreams”... thoughts both nostalgic and superficial all equalized with that same soothing register, like being inside someone’s lyrical diary as opposed to the main stage.
Tim's thoughts on this song echo its simplicity, stating only that one should try to have fun while listening to it. The sweet invitation sees beyond the world of overanalyzing, making sense, or maybe even reviewing it? In the waterfall of words, Tim might share some of the darkest or deepest haunts of his experience. Against a blissfully mellow backdrop, the quest to search for meaning disappears into the desire to just enjoy.
Solo is part of Tim’s new mixtape “Pink,” described as a tribute to coming of age. The album stays true to that lyrical intimacy, revealing the thoughts that accompany adolescence to adulthood—the usual dreams of money and desire, but if this single was just a taste, then perhaps there are a few more surprises to uncover. The unique and purely enjoyable sound of Tim is not to go unnoticed, with perhaps a future far beyond the simple SoundCloud follow of the moment.
