“CAN YOU FEEL IT?” by SPEAK! is a song that evokes a perfect summer hangout. It’s easy-going, fun, and will have you wanting more just like a perfect barbeque. The melody is groovy, making you want to bob your head along to the beat, only to wind up dancing once the horns come in. On that note, there are so many layers to the melody to dissect! From guitars to back-up singers, at every musical corner there seems to be something new to discover, making you fall in love with this song over and over again.

Now, with most songs that I review, I typically listen to it a few times, with the first listen for general impressions and the second or third for lyrics. For this song, I kept getting distracted by the melody and found myself dancing in my chair instead of taking notes on the lyrics. But eventually, I was able to calm down and finally give the lyrics the attention they deserve.

This song tells a great tale of the singer trying to kindle a love from the past. It focuses on the nostalgia of youth like in the line: “Falling over the handlebars but we didn’t even seem to mind” only to focus on the present and how the singer is “stuck on repeat.”
If you are like me, you’ll find yourself cheering for the singer to take the chance and ask the lover out.

SPEAK! is the latest collaborative project by Jake Parsons, a Birmingham-based songwriter and producer. Jake wrote this song during the summer of 2020 when the world was beginning to open back up. He worked with several people in his musical family including Lucy Hill and Shananon from DAME. As the project kicks off with “CAN YOU FEEL IT?”, be sure to keep them on your radar for further releases!
