Each Measure Feature: Marcus Christ
FEATURE
Sometimes, it is best for an artist to take a step-back from the scene. This creative break can give birth to brilliant ideas that result in fantastic tracks and albums. A great example of this comes from Marcus Christ’s latest release: “Get the Haters Back.” After taking a brief break from the music scene, Marcus is coming back strong with his new stuff. His latest single, “Get the Haters Back”, is a great example of this.
The song’s beginning mimics that of a rollercoaster ascending. The song starts with a simple, beautiful piano cascading down the scales. This slowly morphs into a synth and from there into a cinematic sounding string section. The piano sets a false sense of calm, much like the slow ascent up on the roller coaster. Continuing on is the synth representing the apex of the climb while the string section is the little dip before the big drop. After this, the song’s power is truly revealed.
The drop is fast and hard. A sick, powerful drum beat sets the new tone for the song backed by Marcus’ lyrics. Marcus is not here to play around–he is here to establish who he is now. He speaks of a metamorphosis of character, creating a stark contrast between his old and new self. This is why he talks about how his haters “all wanna know me” for now he has grown as a person and musician. As the song progresses, Marcus continues to flush out this new version of himself, paying homage to his past and the greats like Tupac and Wu-Tang Clan.
It is a great song about rebirth and establishing a new era for Marcus Christ. As he continues to release new songs for his upcoming album American Pharoah, it is becoming clear that Marcus’ return to the scene is a powerful and strong one for sure.
