Each Measure Feature: Gideon Unna

I think that with the recent events in the news, it can be easy to focus on the negativity of the world. This can suck us down into a pit of despair, but, as GIDEON UNNA and Kaley Halperin remind us in their latest song, it doesn’t have to be this way. In their song “What is Love,” the two talented artists focus on defining what it means to love, reminding us all of the importance of focusing on love instead of hate.
This message is needed today, as it seems more often than not we forget our humanity. We forgot the importance of showing love for each other. I love how the two artists convey this idea with the line, “We are taught to hate the side that’s against us, not to know the reason why.”
Musically, the song is reminiscent of 60’s hippie folk. It starts off with a catchy, simple chord progression on the acoustic guitar. This was done well, as it highlights the overall message being sung. As the song progresses, the drums and pianos kick in around the chorus to bring the song to its full value.
One of my favorite aspects of this song was the sense of delicacy Kaley Halperin brings to her vocals. For the subject matter at hand, it fits perfectly. It’s not about forcing the listeners to action but instead reminding us all of the importance of showing love over hate. For this message, you need a warmer song, and these two have crafted exactly that.
This is the second song these two have released together for GIDEON UNNA’s upcoming album. And if this intimate, soul-filled song is an indication of the album to come, it is going to be an amazing one.
