Each Measure Feature: Colston

The south is no stranger to disaster and challenging times, especially areas like North Carolina with severe weather like Hurricane Helene. Even so, the people are strong and resilient, always rising above the ashes of disaster. This is what Colston captures in his latest release “Helene.” The song is a rock powerhouse that hasn’t forgotten its country roots. It has energetic electric guitar riffs, intense rap style elements in regards to the vocals and, in the same measure, an absolutely amazing fiddle played by Don Lewis. These elements give the song its strong presence on the music scene. And while I loved the instrumentals of the song, it is the lyrics that solidified this as a great up and coming track.
This song is about the people of Asheville after the damages of Hurricane Helene but it is not a song wanting sympathy. No, Colston focuses on the strength of the people with lyrics like “the water level rose but we gonna rise above it” and “you can try and hold them down but they still gonna fight.” Colston through carefully crafted lines conveys a powerful message of hope and resilience amidst disaster. Listening to this song empowers you, reminding us all that amongst the tough times are friends and neighbors ready to help us out.
Colston’s intense lyrics are straight from the heart as he himself is a native of Ashville, North Carolina. For this song, he teamed up with his best friend Neil Lackey alongside Don Lewis to craft a powerful, emotional song.
